The Internet: One Massive Circle Jerk, Paradoxically Cock Blocked.

Rant / Satire Mode: [Triggered]

Circle Jerks

The simplest example: Go into any subreddit and try to discuss the inverse opinion. For example, /r/investing – lots of older investors, dabbling in the legacy financial market. If you go in there and drop a comment that even faintly smells of crypto you will be down-voted into oblivion – your idea muted. Now take this concept and apply it to the whole of the internet. The term for this is echo chambers, aka circle jerks.

Internet Cock Blocking

You think, okay… I’ll just go post in my community and join the jerk. HOLD ON! Not so fast little guy – you have to read the rules!

Now that you’ve read our novel and forfeited your life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, you can post your content. If you’re lucky and a mod doesn’t have a stick up his ass (good luck) the post will be approved.

Actual Reddit Mod About to Deny Another Post

This has happened to me frequently on Reddit. Another fond memory I have is trying to post my original Bitcoin rocketship gif I made. It was removed because “too many posts of this kind” were on the board at that moment. I honestly have given up on posting to Plebbit.

4chan biz Welcome Image

You think, okay, I’ll just go to 4chan to share my original content. Surely, you can converse freely with little to no moderation, I mean… It’s the cesspool of the internet. NOPE! Think again, you goddamn idiot. You think the internet is some interconnected free-flowing cluster of ideas? THINK AGAIN.

4chan Janitor Enter Key Real Time

I shit you not, one of 4chan’s rules is “Do NOT use it to promote your business, ventures, or anything you may have an interest in.

I laughed when I read this. You think people are posting just because? They have an interest in seeing their thread get attention. Literally every thread is shilling a project or scam out of self interest.

Further, the thread I had going that got me banned, had a decent amount of people who were genuinely interested, had questions, and were effectively suppressed by 4chan mods.

Closing / Curation is Necessary / A More Serious Note

Don’t misunderstand, you need checks & balances. You need to combat spam. I just never remember it being this difficult. I can’t be the only one who feels this way…

Personally, I believe the grasp around the internet’s neck is ever increasing, tighter and tighter – censored and manipulated more than ever.

Side Note: Websites Own You and Your Content

If you inspect these websites TOS closely enough, there’re clauses that forfeit any right you may have to the image, text, or video you just uploaded.

I recently tried out Hive.io and wrote a post here. These types of blockchain websites seem to have struck a good balance between self moderation and freedom of speech. However, the traffic is substantively lower than say 4chan, or Reddit.

Maybe one day Hive, or the new “Reddit” of the blockchain world will come about and save the day, one can hope.
